Markham Rhenish Church in Richmond Hill expanded its facilities to support a growing congregation, especially younger families seeking fellowship and community integration. The centerpiece of the project was a flexible gymnasium designed to host a regulation basketball court and convert into a fellowship hall with a stage.

The scope included:

  • A gymnasium/fellowship hall addition

  • Expansion of the parking lot with 36 new spaces, including barrier-free spots

  • A conceptual plan for future building expansion

Despite the simplicity of the addition, the church faced a complex Site Plan Approval process due to its corner-lot location near a residential area. Coordination with municipal authorities was essential.

Architectural priorities included:

  • Seamless integration with the existing church structure

  • Respectful massing and roofline relative to the sanctuary

  • Concealed rooftop mechanical units

  • Durable detailing at envelope tie-ins

With a responsive design and careful planning, construction proceeded smoothly, enabling the church to meet current needs while preparing for future growth.
